E-rate

It is a federal program that draws on the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) universal service fund that provides discounts of up to 90% on the Internet to private K-12 schools and non-profit public libraries.

What is E-rate?

E-rate is a federal program that draws on the universal service fund of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and provides discounts to telecommunications users, with the purpose of offering services to educational institutions and libraries.

Who is eligible?

o Private nonprofit K-12 schools
o Non-profit public libraries

What services are eligible?

o Internet access (high-speed cable connection, fiber transport and wireless connection)
o Telephony services (VoIP)
o Internal connections (access points, antennas, cabling and related components for internal networks, caching, firewall services and their components, switches, routers, racks, power backup system or UPS, system controllers and wireless programming and management of Wifi)

What discounts apply?

Discounts applicable on Internet access services to an eligible school or library range from 20% to 90%. In the case of internal connections, up to 85% are eligible.

How are discounts granted?

The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) administers funding by evaluating each institution according to federal poverty level and location criteria.
